Japan and the Pacific
Main Idea: Japan was greatly affected by WWII they developed new ways of trade and changed socially and economically into a huge industrial power. South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong also known as the "Asian Tigers took ideas from the growing Japan to try and expand their trade. Australia and New Zeland traded with these Asian countries to get back on their feet after the war.
POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT From 1945-1952 Japan was an occupied country held by Allied military forces. Douglas MacAruthur governed Japan, he was held accountable for destroying Japanese war machine. "MacArthur, Perry writes, could be “short-tempered, abrupt, sullen, and impatient.” Also “small-minded, embittered, suspicious.” (The most Dangerous Man in America, Washington Post). However under his control a new confutation was made saying that women had equal rights and that Japan agreed to maintain armed forces. Japan took action and created their new consitution to be like the U.S Constitution. The United States Constution today called for universal suffrage and a balance between the powers also known as separation of powers. Japan today is a stable democratic society. ECONOMY When the Allies occupied Japan the officials wanted to dismantle Japans business. How ever the Cold War between Soviet Union and United States postponed this from occurring and Japan had a chance to get back on it's feet. To support these political changes, the Americans instituted reforms to make economic power in Japan more "democratic." (American Occupation of Japan). Most Japanese people lived on farms. However after the end of the Allied occupation in 1952. Japan today is the 2nd biggest trading country after china. They however have restrictions on trade such as, "Imports into the EU of certain iron and steel products can be subject to, a double-checking (export licences against import licences and quotas." (European Commission). SOCIAL CHANGES AND CULTURE A new educational system was made called the Mejij education system. This education system stressed loyalty to the emperor. The war had a huge effect on women is Japan. "Women gained the right to vote, and were encouraged to be involved politically." The first women to hold office name was Shidzue Katō she was a Member of Parliament. She took office in 1946. "In OECD countries, men earn on average 16% more than women in similar full-time jobs. At 21%, the gender gap is even higher at the top of the pay scale, suggesting the continued presence of a glass ceiling. Even though there has been progress in narrowing the gender gap in pay, especially in employment, this is not enough and much remains to be done in many countries." (Japan today). Japanese women today still earn less than men, it was just like that in the 1950's. SOUTH KOREA South Korea was under the dictatorial president Syngman Rhee in 1953. " The constitution, however, limited the president to only two terms. Hence, when the end of Rhee's second term of office approached, the constitution again was amended (in November 1954) by the use of fraudulent tactics that allowed Rhee to succeed himself indefinitely." (SouthKorea- The Syngman Rhee Era). It's clear to say that South Korea was under corruption because Syngman wanted to rule for life like a king. Instead of following the law. South Korea hoped on the trading wagon and now trades with many countries. They now trade automobiles, wireless commutation iron, steel and many other goods. TAIWAN Ruled by Chaing Kai-Shek. The capital was at Taipei on Taiwan. They were a part of the "Asian Tigers" They mimicked Japan and south Korea in trade. SINGAPORE AND HONG KONG "Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements in 1826." (Google). |
